Vitrine is a 4K CGI video that explores themes of time and the symbolic power of statues. At the center of the work is a 3D scan of the controversial sculpture Vyachko and Meelis defending Tartu (1950), enclosed in a rectangular glass case and set within a pine forest that has been recently subjected to deforestation. The sculpture—widely used during the Soviet era as a symbol of Estonian-Russian historical friendship—is preserved behind glass, transforming it into an object that is at once protected, monumentalized, and distanced. By placing the statue in the heart of a devastated forest, Bicknell-Knight raises questions about what society collectively chooses to safeguard—and, conversely, what it allows to disappear.
