Anna Škodenko. Proposal for reframing Richard Sagrits’ painting Old Tallinn

The proposal is to cover both paintings with UV-protected acrylic glass, add new visual elements and install LED text screens under the paintings.

I suggest that the red flag be covered with gold leaf. On the symbolic side, this makes the flag ambivalent. On the one hand, gold has an imperialist connotation, signifying the achievement of wealth and pride by great powers at the expense of other countries. On the other hand, gold refers to alchemy – the philosophical search for gold as a spiritual journey and the hope of transformation.

An LED display could be installed under the painting, reminiscent of the information boards previously used in airports.

The running text could convey the following message:

“Many different flags have hung here throughout history. We remember them all, but will hope that we will never again be forced to raise (or paint) fabrics of the wrong colour and symbolic meaning.”
