“During the Soviet era, a lot of monumental art was created, which is now in danger of destruction along with depreciating buildings. Since the beginning of this week, art students have been saving Andrus Kasemaa’s special mural in Peri, Põlva County.
Students from the Estonian Academy of Arts and the Tartu Higher Art School Pallas have been engaged in rescue work since the beginning of this week in the clubhouse of the former collective farm center in the center of the Peri village in Põlva County. Andrus Kasemaa painted the mural “The War of Mahtra” there, which is directly inspired by Eduard Vilde’s work of the same name. For the students, this is a responsible job.
“We’re going to divide this mural into pieces, then we’re going to take them with metal frames, we’re going to take the edges off with a razor blade so that we can wrap the frame around it. The initial fear was that we’d only be able to take a few details off here, but we’ve been lucky in that the plaster has come off the wall very nicely and we’ll probably be able to take this entire large mural with us, so to speak. My heart is trembling a little. It’s not trembling anymore. So much has already been done that I’m not afraid anymore, but the first few times were a bit scary,” said EKA first-year student Ekke Valner.”
