On May 28–30, 2026, the AABS conference on Baltic studies, titled “Diasporas: Building Bridges Across Nations,” took place on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana, United States.
On the final day of the conference, Linda Kaljundi, Kirke Kangro, and Gregor Taul—members of the project “How to Reframe Monuments”—presented a joint panel discussion. The title of the panel was “Art in Action – Baltic Monument Wars and Contemporary Artistic Interventions.”
Linda Kaljundi opened the panel discussion by speaking about the need to make sense of complex heritage and comparing discussions on this topic in Eastern Europe and the United States. In his presentation, Gregor Taul compared examples of the reinterpretation of monuments from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Kirke Kangro’s presentation focused on the artistic interventions created as part of the “How to Reframe Monuments” project. The presentations were followed by a roundtable discussion between the speakers and the audience.
