Kirke Kangro: an ethical compass is crucial when dealing with such material
What to do with the legacy of totalitarian regimes? Should we intervene in it? And if so, in what case – and how?
The exhibition has started from the practical need to relate to two ideologically charged socialist realist monumental paintings in the old terminal of Tallinn Airport. One of them is Viktor Karrus’ “View of Moscow” and the other is Richard Sagrits’ “View of Tallinn” (both 1955). In 2025, a competition was held in cooperation with Tallinn Airport to create interventional artworks, but the winning work was not realized due to the decision of the client. The paintings have been loaned to the Estonian Academy of Arts for the exhibition to introduce the artists’ interventions in dialogue with the original works. Additional layers are opened by archive materials related to the airport. After the exhibition, the works will be transferred to the Art Museum of Estonia. Curator Kirke Kangro will speak.
