New frames for the Tehumardi monument: opening on November 14

On Friday, November 14, starting at 1:00 p.m., interested parties are invited to Tehumardi, where a rethinking of the Tehumardi memorial will be presented. This is the first newly framed Soviet-era memorial in Estonia. The artistic and spatial solution has been completed in cooperation with the Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn University and the Estonian Heritage Board.

The monument opened in 1967 (authors Riho Kuld, Matti Varik, Allan Murdmaa) and the area surrounding it have taken on a new meaning – last summer, the remains of the soldiers were reburied and the memorial was partially removed. The remaining memorial with Soviet symbolism has now received a modern and thoughtful interpretation, the author of which is the artist Neeme Külm, who won the design competition. In addition, information boards were installed near the memorial, introducing the story of the battle, the monument erected on it, as well as its historical interpretation and rethinking.

At 2 pm, a gathering with short presentations will follow at the Kuressaare Cultural Centre (Tallinna tn 6). The speakers will be Jüri-Martin Lepp (National Heritage Board), Kristo Nurmis (Tallinn University), Kirke Kangro (Estonian Academy of Arts) and Neeme Külm. The video greeting will be made by sculptor Riho Kuld.

The rethinking of the memorial was carried out by the Estonian Academy of Arts and Tallinn University project “New Frames of the Monument”, in cooperation with Saaremaa Municipality and the National Heritage Board.
